Newborn Photography PART 1 of 3: Posed vs. Lifestyle

A new baby is now on the way and you love to document this special and important event of your family's life. So you decide to hire a newborn photographer. But...you have many questions:

There are so many photographers out there. They all seem very talented and own stunning online portfolios. How can I narrow down the list and find the right one?

What is the difference between Posed vs. Lifestyle photos?

How far in advance should I book for a session?

What if the baby arrives early or later than the due date?

What do I need to prepare on the day of the session? What should we and the baby wear?

How long does a newborn session take?

So........for this first part of the series, I will explain about the different styles of newborn photography, and how it may affect your decision on which photographer is a better fit for you. Additionally, I will share about my style and approach to photographing a newborn. Next, I will focus on timing for booking a session. Finally, in the the last part of the series, I will talk about what to expect during an in-home newborn session.

Posed Style Newborn Portraits:

There are many newborn photographers on the market with different styles. Are you more drawn to photos of classic sleepy babies, naked or perhaps wrapped up in blankets, lying in a decorative basket? These perfectly posed shots are generally considered to be posed, studio style newborn portraits. It requires more extensive setup such as backdrop stand, backdrops, studio lighting and a wide selection of outfits and props. This style session usually takes place in a studio. However, more and more photographers now offer to take this type of classic posed portraits at home. He or she may provide some simple backdrop and props and do a simple setup to achieve the look.

Lifestyle Newborn Portraits:

Or do you prefer photos taken at your home, in the baby's newly decorated nursery or in your cosy family room where everyone spends most quality time together as a family? These photos focus on the connection between the parents, the baby and the siblings if any. The photographer will find ideal spots and incorporate things around your home, which then creates unique and meaningful photographs for your own family. This style allows a more relaxed setting, the photos will be less posed and candid.

What Can You Expect in My Newborn Session?

I take a combination of posed and lifestyle photos. I like to provide my clients with photos of the curled up sleepy baby in front of neutral and textured background, and incorporate adorable accessories or outfits that the parents love to create unique and artistic images. After all, your newborn is the star of the show! On the other hand, instead of sticking with the plain backdrop, I prefer to capture group shots using your home surrounding as the background. You are welcoming this newest member to your home and your family. So your home just seems like the best place for me to snap these shots. Maybe a shot with you and the dad soothing the baby on the rocking chair? Or in the living room, the siblings surround the baby looking excited because they have been waiting to meet the baby in person? I want to compose photographs that show the meaningful connection for your family. You can visit my portfolio to check out some of my work.

Now it is time for you to decide which style attracts you more. Do you like one style over the other or do you like both? By answering to the question, you will be able to communicate your preference to the photographer to see if he or she is a good fit for you.
